Abstract

|
The purpose of this review is to familiarize the reader with historical review and some recent concepts of the epidemiol.ozy, pathogenesis, and treatment of various clinical aspects of cerebrovascular accidents in Korea. It has been shown that CVA is the first ranking cause of death in
Korea at Present. It was found that clinically about 50~60% of all cases were cerebral thrombosis, 30~40% cerebral hemorrhage and 15% Subahachroid hemorrhage.
The age distriibation revealed the highest peak between 60~70 years of age in cerebral thrombosis.
The most frequent cause of cerebral hemorrhage was hypertension and cerebral arteriosclerosis was the main cause for cerebral thrombosis. It is our feeling that in order to learn epidemiologic aspects of CVA in Korea, Aortic arteriography or aortic arch angiography should be performed moreroutinely in Medical Centers. This procedures´ are important not only in diagnostic aspect but also from therapeutic point of view.
It is our hope that in Korea, we also should have more autopsy materials for the study of the pathogenesis in CVA.
